I. What is VDE?
VDE (Verband Der Elektrotechnik) is one of the largest scientific and technical associations in Europe, responsible for the testing and certification of electrical tools and equipment. The VDE Testing and Certification Institute is a nationally and internationally recognized organization in the fields of electrical equipment, components and systems. VDE is headquartered in Frankfurt am Main and has main branches in Brussels and Berlin with more than 36,000 members including 1,300 corporate and institutional members and 8,000 students, who always strive to study and dedicate themselves to their work.
II. DIN - VDE standard types
In Europe, VDE standards have 10 types as follows:
- DIN EN 60900: Hand-held tools for use up to 1000 V AC and 1 500 V DC
- DIN 18015- Information on electrical systems in residential buildings, their minimum equipment.
- VDE 0141 - VDE regulations for earthing.
- DIN EN 50110/VDE 0105-100 - VDE regulations for the operation of high voltage systems.
- DIN VDE 0104 - Setting up and operating electrical test systems.
- DIN EN 61310-3/VDE 0113-103 - Specification for electrical equipment of processing and manufacturing machines with voltages up to 1 kV
- VDE 0100-610 - Installation of high voltage systems with voltages up to 1 kV during initial testing.
- VDE 0165-1 - Installation of electrical systems in potentially explosive areas.
- VDE 0701-0702 - Testing after repair and alteration of electrical equipment.
- VDE 0100 - Planning, construction and testing of high voltage systems up to 1 kV in residential buildings as well as commercial and public areas.
III. VDE Instrument Testing Procedure
1. Check voltage
To perform the Voltage Test, the instruments are immersed in water with 10,000V of electricity for 24 hours. After this period, they are energized with 10,000V AC for three minutes. No sparks or breakdown through the insulation occur. When no current is detected, they are approved for a maximum of 1,000V AC (and 1,500V DC), thus achieving VDE Certification.
2. Cold shock test
The instruments are cooled to -25°C (-13°F), and during this process the insulating material must retain its flexibility so that it does not break under impact and shock.
3. Check adhesion
The adhesion of the insulating material coating is tested by applying a pull force of 500N after storage for 168 hours, (7 days) at 70°C (158°F). The insulating material shall remain firmly connected to the tool.
4. Check pressure
No discharge breakdown of the sheath occurred at a pressure of 20N, a temperature of 70°C and a test voltage of 5,000 VAC.
5. Burning test
When exposed to flame for about 10 seconds, the insulating material does not continue to burn but extinguishes the fire at that location.

IV. VDE Standards on Knipex Pliers
As you know, Knipex is a company specializing in the production of tools for clamping pliers, wire strippers, cos crimping tools, etc. To better serve the electrical industry and especially in high voltage environments, the company has produced tools with VDE standards to serve that purpose. The meaning of the VDE symbol on insulated tools of Knipex pliers.
- VDE-GS mark: This symbol stands for the safety of the product against electrical, mechanical, thermal, toxic, radioactive and other hazards. In addition, tools with the VDE-GS mark comply with VDE regulations or European or international harmonized standards.
- Double triangle and voltage range: If insulated tools are marked with the double triangle symbol and a specification or voltage class or voltage range is indicated, they are suitable for working on parts supplied at that voltage class.
- IEC 60900: An international standard that describes further design details of insulating tools, for example, the thickness of the protective insulation is specified. There are also individual tests (sample tests) as well as random and mass sample tests to check the electrical safety of the protective insulation. Because of the strict standards and testing conditions of VDE tools, you can rest assured to use insulated tools according to the allowed voltage.
